Studio as Laboratory

In photography, video, and painting, Stefanie Bürkle explores the theme of the studio as a laboratory. A central piece in the exhibition is the two-channel video “Me Crossing Deep Water Channel.” In it, the artist imagines the laboratory as a studio by becoming part of an experiment and subjecting her body to a scientific facility. She repeatedly swims across a 250-meter long and 5-meter deep flow channel, the so-called deep water trench of the Experimental Hydrodynamics Laboratory at the TU Berlin. The space, built exclusively for machines and experiments, is newly encoded by a human action.
